    Walk in Wisdom

“What were you thinking?” If you’ve been asked this question, it’s probably not because you did something brilliant or helpful. Some of the most embarrassing, painful moments of our lives have been accompanied by this very question, because this question arises when something foolish takes place.

The Old Testament, especially the book of Proverbs, has much to say about the differences between wisdom and folly. In the New Testament, James 3:13-18 describes what a wise person looks like.

Ephesians 5:15-21 reminds us that the Christian’s life is to be marked by a change in how we live. Last week we read that we are to walk as children of light – there are things we should be doing and things we shouldn’t. Today we will continue on that theme of “walking,” emphasizing our need to walk in wisdom, as seen in verses 15-21.

  • Ephesians 4:22-32

Followers of Christ Experience Transformation by God and Live Governed by His Word.

Christians must be vigilant to maintain a shining testimony of Christ before others who need Him. God has transformed us through His salvation and requires our participation in His ongoing work in us.

In Ephesians 4:22-32, Paul describes the true follower of Christ as someone who knows God’s transforming power and is governed by God’s Word.

Unity Through Diverse Gifts, Part 1

Paul urges the church to pursue unity, but in Ephesians 4:7-12, he shifts focus to emphasize the importance of diversity. It is the differences in the gifts that God bestows that make the church strong. The church matures when diverse gifts operate together in unity.

God’s Glory in the Church – Living in Unity

Ephesians chapters 1–3 provide the foundation for chapters 4–6. If you were familiar with Greek grammar, you’d notice that chapters 4–6 contain 41 commands, while chapters 1–3 contain none. The first three chapters are essential for understanding how God has transformed us and brought Jews and Gentiles together as one body. Beginning in chapter 4, Paul shifts the focus to how God is maturing us.

Paul’s (Second) Prayer for the Church in Ephesus

In Ephesians 1:15-29, Paul gave an extended prayer for the church. Now in Ephesians 3:14-21, Paul gives another extended prayer for the church. Paul wants the Ephesian believers to have hearts strengthened with power through the Holy Spirit, so that Christ may live comfortably in them. First Paul prayed that they would be strengthened by God. Next, Paul prays that they would grow in their knowledge of God’s love.

Paul’s (Second) Prayer for the Church in Ephesus

In Ephesians 3:14-21, Paul offers a second prayer for the Ephesians. He prays to emphasize that Jews and Gentiles are united as one body and are being built together into a dwelling place for God. In his prayer, Paul humbly expresses that he bends his knees before the Father, the One who has named him and is the same Father of the Christians he addresses. Let’s examine the specific requests Paul makes and the purpose behind them.

God’s Plan for Unity, Part 2

In Ephesians 3:1-13, Paul explains how God had a plan from eternity past that He was now revealing.

It is significant, as this plan, referred to as a mystery, cannot be held back by man or any circumstance and puts present difficulties into perspective (Eph. 3:1, 12-13).

The source of this plan is God and is in accordance with the eternal purpose of Christ Jesus as God had intended all along (Eph. 3:2-3, 11).

The scheduling of God’s plan is novel as it had not been revealed in this way before and magnifies His wisdom presently (Eph. 3:4-5, 9b-10).

The outcome of God’s plan is for His people to be one body in unity, unifying all kinds of people (Eph. 3:6).
