How to Have a Word-Saturated Home.

We will take this week and next to study some practical ways to implement what we learned in Deuteronomy 6:4-7 two weeks ago. Any home, whether you are married or single, with or without children, must practice these things.

You may have heard the saying, "Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." This is what we do at our church through discipleship (Matthew 28:19-20) and what we must do in our households.

Consistently

Deuteronomy 11:19 reminds us that spiritual discussions should be commonplace in our home. Whatever other conversations happen in our home, there is nothing that God's Word does not address. Our new nature indwelt by the Holy Spirit allows us to understand how the Word applies to all areas of life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3). Joshua 1:8-9 tells us how frequently we are to speak about God's Word and its comprehensive application to every part of life.

Deeply

2 Timothy 3:14-17 shows that Timothy's family members taught him God's Word so thoroughly that he was equipped by age 18 to join Paul on a missionary journey. (See Acts 16.) You must know the Word well enough to teach it deeply to others in your household.

Next week, we will discuss how to meaningfully saturate your home with God's Word.

Application Points

  • How can you consistently expose your children to the Word of God in your home? There are many creative and ordinary ways you can do this. What can you think of? Show children the importance of God's Word for every part of their life and yours. At the least, Pastor Tim recommends spending 5 minutes every night rehearsing a Scripture verse, memorizing it together, and praying. Even if you don't have children, make sure you spend consistent time in God's Word every morning.
  • If there ever was a time in our history and culture that deep and wide believers were needed, now is the time! Keep growing in your own knowledge so you can live and teach God's Word to others.
